Recently my thought is about shadows, perhaps, due to the
influence of my favourite Haruki Murakami’s book “Hard-Boiled Wonderland and
End of the World”.
According to this book it said something like: What is the
purpose of shadows?
Shadow seems to be a menial thing that with or without it we
still can be able to survive.
Indeed, what is the reason God created shadows?
With this I keep on thinking and finally got my answer.
We are living in this advance digital era of 21st
century, therefore, didn’t realized the importance of shadows. But to our
ancestors, shadows were used to measure the time, which is another important
thing in our life.
Other than measuring the time, have you ever wondered how
will this world be if it doesn’t have shadows?
Perhaps the plants will died up due to the absence of shades
and direct sunlight. Also, the risk of getting skin cancers and other derma
diseases will be increased either, as nothing can protect us from the ever
shining Sun. And yes without shadows, we won’t have any eclipses or full moon cycle
too, especially the full moon cycle which actually involves with sea tide and
etc.
Never thought that a menial couldn’t be bothered thing can
be so influential too, can’t it?
And with this, it shows one of our human flaws.
We take things for granted; especially to those we love,
i.e. our parents, our spouses, lovers and etc.
The closer we
attached to them, the more we take them for granted. We may think that they
must do this or that for us, and if they didn’t we end up throwing tantrums at
them, hurting their feelings. But, have you ever thought that they got a choice
to ignore your needs too?? However, it’s because of love they swallow their
pride and help us with open heart, despite our grumbles and complains.
Our love ones are
like our shadows, they are closely attached to us but we seldom recognize their
existence. People tend to miss something after they lost it, before that they
were just being ignorant. This is the most regrettable thing in life;
therefore, please do appreciate our love ones when they are still around!
Other than that, in some old mythologies or folklores,
shadows mean our soul. That is why ghosts are depicted in certain books or
movies as person without shadows. Nonetheless, this type of people exists in
this world. We are not talking about the supernatural phenomena, but a solid
life form human without a soul. These soul-less human sold their soul to
gambling, alcohol, fame, vain, sex, power and etc.
